Life without the Newspaper
Every morning there is a tussle between my father and brother – they both want to be the first to get the morning newspaper.
Life without newspapers is difficult to imagine. We get news and views from all corners of the world. We may have watched the latest breaking news on TV the night before, but we want to read all the details in the morning news. Only then do we feel informed and ready to tackle discussions on all issues ranging from the social to the political, knowing full well that the newspaper is there to support our statements and give them authority.
Newspapers have information for and about everyone – the businessman, the officegoer, the sports-lover and people looking for employment or entertainment – the list is endless. We can keep abreast of all the advances made in the field of arts and the sciences, education, medicine and technology. There are book reviews and movie reviews; cartoons and crosswords; religious discourses and editorials that comment on the present times; and your daily horoscope.

In a democratic nation like ours, newspapers have an important role to play. They have the responsibility of bringing to public notice the views and policies of the government. In addition, there are comments. They also make us aware of our rights. Often public opinion is expressed through newspapers, which become a forum for debate.
What about the tussle that started in the morning? Well, Dad gets to keep the main section of the newspaper while my brother has to be content with the sports section. As for me, I must make do with the entertainment section, where I read the cartoons and solve crossword puzzles.
