How does UPI work?

To use UPI, you need to have a bank account that is linked to your mobile number. You also need to have a UPI-enabled mobile app installed on your smartphone.

Here’s how a UPI transaction works:

  1. Open the UPI app on your smartphone and select the option to send money.
  2. Enter the recipient’s UPI ID or bank account details.
  3. Enter the amount you wish to transfer and add a remark, if required.
  4. Confirm the transaction and enter your UPI PIN or use biometric authentication to complete the transaction.
  5. The money will be instantly transferred to the recipient’s bank account.

  5. Paying bills: You can use UPI to pay bills for various services, such as electricity, phone, gas, and water. Select the ‘Bill Payment’ option on the UPI app, choose the service provider, enter the bill amount, and confirm the transaction by entering your UPI PIN.

UPI transactions are secure and can be completed 24/7, including weekends and holidays. The UPI system is interoperable, which means you can transfer money between accounts of different banks using a single UPI app.
